Asprougas – A hidden beach in the south of Crete

Ιn the island of Crete there are some secluded and hidden beaches that are often known only to the locals. The beach of Asprougas or Asproulas, is one of them.

In the central part of the southern coast of Koufonissi, (Koufonissi, is a small and arid island 4 miles south of Goudouras and 80km southeast of Agios Nikolaos), is located the beach of Asprougas, a beach, completely secluded and untouched, covered with pale reddish, tropical African sand, shallow and clear, blue waters and wonderful geological formations.

We should mention that, the word “Asprougas” in the Cretan dialect means “white” and describes exactly the soft whitish clay rocks of the area. This type of clay that abounds throughout the whole region has healing properties and is ideal for mud spa.

The area of Asprougas could be described as a “geological museum”, full of fossils (one slope of the area is fully covered with fossils from a extinct species of snail). Furthermore, on several rocks of the area there are marks dating from the Roman era by the visitors who wanted to leave their “print” in this unique place.
