The statue of Daedalus and Icarus in Agia Galini

Agia Galini is a popular seaside resort that provides all the comforts to its guests. It is located 61km southeast of Rethymnon and 68km southwest of Heraklion. The beautiful beaches, the port and the village with its picturesque alleys, taverns and shops compose the scenery of the area.

In Agia Galini is also located the cave of Daedalus. In this cave he hid with his son Icarus while being persecuted by King Minos, when according to legend, they tried to fly to freedom using improvised wings glued with wax.

The rock that Daedalus and Icarus used as a base for their flight, is located on the right side of the port overlooking the sea, reminiscent of their doomed journey. At this point there are two statues, those of Daedalus and Icarus as they prepare for their journey.

The monument was created in recent years and can be admired up close, as it does not have many stairs and access to it is relatively easy.

At the same time, the view from the point to the South Cretan Sea and to Agia Galini is amazing.
