Lake Orne is located in the prefecture of Rethymno, just 500 meters northeast of the village of Orne and 50 km away from Rethymnon.
The small lake Orne, is located at an altitude of 300 meters on the southeastern foot of Mount Kedros.
Lake Orne is a natural lake that is formed only during the winter, from the springs of the area that are transported from the snowy peaks of Kedros, and thus create a 10 acres depression in the ground, embraced by olive groves.
Near Lake Orne, you can admire the many waterfalls of Mount Kedros and its springs, while nearby is also the «Kissano gorge».
The limestone rocks dominate the mountain Kedros which has a conical shape. On its west side is the «Yous Kampos Plateau», while is surrounded by several small villages that reach an altitude of 400 to 600 m.,
The ecological importance of Mount Kedros derives mainly from its endemic or rare flora and the ideal conditions provided by the steep geological profile of the mountain in the nesting of many vultures.
Eight species of reptiles and three species of amphibians are permanent residents of Kedros. Among the important and protected species of flora of the area have been recorded two rare species of plants that are endemic in the area.
