The Mosque of Ierapetra

The church of Agios Ioannis was turned into a mosque at the end of the 19th century, according to the dates written on the lintel of its entrance. It is a square building with a wooden roof covered with tiles. In its architecture there are elements that derive from the neoclassical trends that reached Crete during the last decades of the 19th century.

In the NW corner of the mosque, as usual, the now empty minaret is built. Its upper part collapsed in the 1953 earthquake and was subsequently rebuilt. At its entrance there is an inscription from the Koran, while in its remodeled courtyard stands out the Turkish fountain, which as a monument always accompanied the Ottoman places of worship.

The Ottoman fountain is located to the SW of the mosque and together with it they constitute a remarkable complex of Ottoman architecture in Crete. The fountain was a purification fountain before the entrance of the faithful to the mosque. It is an octagonal domed building, made of processed stones of various sizes. Outflow holes are maintained on all sides as well as water collection urns.
