The small town of Paleochora – Pachia ammos beach

Paleochora is a small town located 77 km south of Chania and is believed that has been built on the site of the ancient city of Kalamidi.

The town is built on an 11-kilometer coastline next to the South Cretan Sea and has been developed as a quiet holiday destination since the early 1970s, when it was a popular hippie destination.

Sight seeing

The castle at Fortezza is a ruined fortress built by the Venetians in 1282 on the low hill overlooking the town.

The Acrites Museum, as the area still preserves the legends of the acrites and Digenis Acritas achievements through songs, place – names ant wall paintings.

We must also mention, in Paleochora, there are plenty of Byzantine and post-Byzantine churches with wonderful frescoes

The wider area has very well organized beaches, but also beautiful and isolated small anchorages. The ships that connect Paleochora with Sougia, Agia Roumeli, Loutro, Chora Sfakion and Gavdos moore at its port.

The beach of Pachia Ammos is located on the west side of Paleochora, 79 km south of Chania.

Pachia Ammos is awarded with a blue flag every year, which confirms that it is a safe and crystal clear coast.

It is the main beach of Paleochora, with good organization and many amenities. The beach is 1 km long, with fine white sand and shallow waters, ideal for children. However, when west and south winds blow, it has big waves.
