Cape Sidero: The lighthouse in the northeastern part of Crete

Cape Sidero (Iron) is the northeasternmost point of Crete and is located 32 km east of Sitia, 99 km east of Agios Nikolaos, next to the Naval Station in Kyriamadi.

At the edge of the cape rises the imposing lighthouse building, 15m high, which still operates today and was built in 1880 by the French Lighthouse Company while the area was under the occupation of the Ottoman Empire.

Cape Sidero joined the Greek Lighthouse Network in 1915.

The lighthouse and the adjacent residence of the guard were destroyed by the Germans in 1941 and thus remained extinct during World War II.

In 1948, it was rebuilt and started operating again with oil, within the framework of the reconstruction of the Lighthouse Network. In 1982 it was electrified and since then operates under supervision.

Access to the lighthouse is prohibited, as it is located inside the naval base, while the gates of the base open on the feast of St. Isidore (February 4).
