Ancient Lissos – The place with the thermal baths where patients from all over Crete were coming to heal

Ancient Lissos, an important, autonomous city of Crete, located on the southern coast of the prefecture of Chania, was famous for its Asclepieion, where patients from all over Crete were coming to be healed. It was built in a small valley between ancient Syia (modern-day Sougia) and Paleochora. It flourished from the Hellenistic years until the 9th century, when it was destroyed by the Saracens.

Dozens of marble statues, parts of buildings and coins of Lissos were found in the area, indicating how developed the city was.

The main ones are the statues of the Goddess of Health, Asclepius and Pluto‘s, which are now in the Archaeological Museum of Chania.

Near the sea there is the church of Agios Kirikos which is built on the site of an early Christian church of the 4th-5th century while on its walls there are built-in architectural members from buildings of the ancient city.

Lissos has its own beach with thick pebbles.
